In India, getting married can be expensive. It can place a heavy burden on families, especially in the case of brides who have been left fatherless. For 230 girls who were left fatherless, Indian tycoon Mahesh Savani hosted a wedding ceremony and given each one wedding gifts that are worth thousands of dollars.
Savani, a diamond trader, threw the mega-wedding ceremony in Surat, located in the western province of Gujarat for 236 fatherless brides who are all from lower middle-class families. Each of the brides was dressed in colorful ethnic attire made up of saris, lenghas, and salwar kameez along with jewelry and adornment worn especially for their wedding day. Thousands of guests were in attendance for the gala event.
The 48-year-old businessman also benevolently gave to each bride a set of household items which included furniture, gold jewelry, clothing and a paycheck of 500,000 rupees or $7,500 in order for her to begin her life as married women.
This is not the first time that Savani has done such a selfless thing for others. Last year he sponsored 151 fatherless girls as well as an additional 111 girls in 2014. For Savani, sponsoring girls without fathers has been a tradition since 2008. Many of these girls now refer to them as their father.
“With Sunday’s mass wedding, I have become [a] proud father to have performed ‘Kanyadaan’ (weddings) of over 700 girls so far,” Savani said.
